The Jacket We Couldn’t Find

Some jackets you find. Others you have to make yourself. Henry belongs firmly in the latter category.

We have always had a soft spot for traditional British safari and Norfolk jackets – from a time when a jacket was expected to be both elegant and practical, and four proper pockets were considered entirely sensible rather than an extravagant design feature.

We wanted to take that heritage and make it a little lighter, a little sharper and altogether more wearable today.

The result is Henry.

Cut from a beautifully mottled green, relatively lightweight 100% wool tweed, Henry has plenty of texture and character without the weight often associated with traditional tweed. This makes it equally at home worn with a shirt and tie, a roll-neck, or simply an open-collar shirt for a more relaxed look.

The influence of classic safari and Norfolk jackets is immediately apparent at the front. Four buttoned patch pockets – two on the chest and two below – give Henry its distinctive character, while the wide lapels keep it firmly on the elegant side of the line between blazer and field jacket.

Turn it around, however, and you will find one of our favourite details.

Henry features a traditional action back, with the pleats continuing down beneath the horizontal back belt. It not only gives the jacket an authentic period character, but also provides greater freedom of movement – a detail from a time when menswear was expected to do more than simply look good.

We deliberately kept the construction light. The jacket is lined only in the sleeves and across the upper back and shoulders, allowing the tweed to move and drape more naturally. It gives Henry a relaxed character and makes it an easy jacket to wear through much of the year.

First Batch

Henry has been a long time coming.

The idea was simple. Making it turned out to be rather less so.

It took several prototypes and adjustments before the jacket looked, fitted and worked quite as we had imagined. But now it is here.

And because we think such things are worth remembering, every jacket from the very first production run carries a small black label inside bearing the words:

FIRST BATCH

Not because it makes the jacket any better. But because there will only ever be one first batch of Henry.

And the name?

Henry is named after our grandson.

It simply seemed the right name for a jacket we have been unusually excited to finally bring to life.

Henry is designed by OLENE – our own Danish countrywear brand, born from a love of tweed, wool and those enduring classics that do not need reinventing every other year.
